Friends of Pangea Day
What is Pangea Day?
On May 10, 2008 – Pangea Day – people all over the world will come together to share a common experience: watching films made by the world for the world. We like to call it the first global campfire.
Pangea Day is a 4-hour live broadcast featuring powerful films, visionary speakers, and inspiring music that will reach millions through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim created Pangea Day after winning the prestigious TED Prize, which grants winners "one wish to change the world."
Jehane’s wish: "To bring the world together through the power of film. The first step toward world peace is to meet the other."
Pangea is the name of the landmass that existed 250 million years ago before it split into separate continents. It’s a reminder that what now appears divided was once whole.
The power of Pangea Day lies in the thousands of self-organized events, hosted by people just like you! To see the growing list of Friends of Pangea Day events, visit www.pangeaday.org and click on "host an event".
Global Interest
More than 1500 films were submitted from 43 countries by the February 15, 2008 deadline.
People are signing up to host Friends of Pangea Day events everywhere, and we expect thousands to register by May 10th.
Here are just a few examples: Friends of Pangea Day in Hong Kong have made their own web site. In Guatemala, Friends are organizing a screening in the National Theatre. A Bedouin camp in Jordan is planning its own Friends of Pangea Day screening.
Stories about Pangea Day have been featured in Agence France-Presse, Al Jazeera, the International Herald Tribune, China Post, South African Film News, Variety, and other publications around the world. Pangea Day has been written about in more than 500 blogs.
Spread the Word
Help spread the word about Pangea Day: email at least 5 family members, friends, and colleagues who live in other cities. Tell them about Pangea Day and encourage them to look for an event in their area or, even better, to host their own.
Join the Pangea Day group on YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other groups coming soon.
When you invite people to your event, encourage them to register at www.pangeaday.org to receive updates with important information.
Movies can’t change the world, but the people who watch them can. We’re grateful for your participation in what we hope will become a grassroots movement to harness the power of film and change how we see ourselves and the world.
